Highlights Of The State Of Yucatan In Mexico For Travelers

Too many people see the state of Yucatan in Mexico as something they have to go through in order to get to the Riviera Maya. The buses that you take from other location in the north of the country almost always have to go through the state with the only exception being those coming from Chiapas. It is advised that you in fact make some time to visit this great state because there are many wonderful things that you can miss if you do not. The beaches are beautiful and you will find some of the most important Mayan temples in Mexico here as well as the place that changed the history of the world forever.



Merida

Merida is the most important modern city in the state of Yucatan and yet it is not a large city like Mexico City. The city however is large enough that you will find a great night life, luxurious hotels and a lot of history. Merida was founded in the 1540's so there is a lot of history to be found here; even some of the homes of conquistadores are still standing. The city has a colonial feel to it and there really is no bad time to visit. The temperatures that you will find year round range from 70F to 95F so leave your sweaters at home.

Progreso

Progreso is a coastal city in the state of Yucatan and it can give you access to some of the most beautiful Mexican beaches you could find. The city is the main port in the state of Yucatan. The city is small bur still growing so you will find several of the amenities that you are used to when you travel. Make sure to visit the Malecon which is by the main beaches in the area. At Malecon you will find great restaurants and hotels with a view of the ocean.

Chicxulub

Chicxulub is one of the most important sites in world history and yet it is one that a lot of people forget to visit. This is the site of the crater that the meteorite that is believed to have killed the dinosaurs left; in other words, if it weren't for the events that took place here humanity may have not existed. The beaches are also a great reason to visit, but keep in mind that this is a small town so the beaches are never that packed and some amenities are hard to find. Getting to the town is a bit confusing, but worth the trip.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a place people think of when they think of Cancun. Though the site is located close to Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo, it is actually in the state of Yucatan. Chichen Itza is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world and one of the most important as well. Because of great preservation efforts the site is in very good shape and you will be able to learn a lot about the Mayan culture and take some of the most amazing pictures you will ever take.
